Teaching Credit Definitions

The following definitions and use guidlines should be used in conjunction with the MCB Teaching Credit Calculator.

  •  Developed a new course (no. modified)
    • The number of new courses developed by you and actually deployed.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each course you develop and place your point(s) in the semester(s) in which it will first be taught.
    • No points are given during development; points are only given in the semester which the course is deployed
    • Example: If you develop a course during the F21 and S22 semesters and it is deployed in the F22 semester, give yourself one (1) point in the F22 semester.
    • Note: If you developed the new course as part of a team, each team member should give themselves a point as described above.

  • Pretenure or Prepromotion semester
    • The semester prior to your tenure or promotion case being evaluated.
    • Give yourself one (1) point in the semester prior to your case evaluation.
    • For example: If you will be going up for tenure or promotion, give yourself one (1) point in the preceding semester of your case submission.

  • Modified an existing course (no. modified)
    • The number of existing courses significantly modified by you. (Example of signifigant modifications: Altering the syllabus to introduce active learning practices for the semester. Altering the syllabus content by more than 50%.)
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each course you modified and place your point(s) in the semester(s) in which the change will be implemented.
    • Example: If you modified course material or pedagogy during the F21 and S22 semesters and those changes are deployed in the F22 semester, give yourself one (1) point in the F22 semester.
    • Note: If you modified the course as part of a team, each team member should give themselves a point as described above.

  • Supervised TAs (no. under your supervision)
    • The number of TAs which you or your team supervise.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each TA you supervise.
    • Example: If you teach 2 courses during the F22 semester, and you have 2 TAs in each of those courses, give yourself four (4) points in the F22 semester.
    • Note: If you are part of a teaching team, each member of the teaching team should give themselves four (4) points as described in the example above.

  • Acted as lead coordinator for team teaching (no. of lead roles)
    • The number of lead roles you assume.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each lead role.
    • Example: If you are a part of 2 unique teaching teams during the F22 semester and you assume the lead role for one (1) of those teams (e.g., you act as coordinator for team meetings, delegate duties to other member, coordinate exams, lead grading process, or otherwise provide direction to your team members) give yourself one (1) point in the F22 semester.
    • Note: If there is no team lead (i.e., all team members share or rotate lead responsibilities), no points should be given.

  • Participated in team teaching efforts (no. of teams)
    • The number of teaching teams you are a part of.
    • Give yourself (1) point for each unique team you participate in.
    • Example: If you are a part of 2 unique teaching teams during the F22 semester, give yourself two (2) points in the F22 semester.

  • Diversified Teaching Portfolio (taught undergrad lower and upper division OR UG and G level course within 1 AY)
    • One can claim a diversified teaching portfolio credit if they teach at least one (1) lower division undergraduate course AND one (1) upper division undergraduate course during a single academic year.
    • - OR -
    • One can claim a diversified teaching portfolio credit if they teach at least one (1) undergraduate course AND one (1) graduate level course during the course of a single academic year.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each academic year in which you have a diversified teaching portfolio. Claim this point in the Spring semester of each academic year.
    • Example: if you have a diversified teaching portfolio during AY22-23, give yourself yourself one (1) point in the S23 semester.

  • Exceptional contribution to teaching (emergencies)
    • One can claim a credit for an exceptional contribution to teaching with approval from the Department Chair in certain, exceptional circumstances.
    • Example: If the instructor of record is unable to continue teach a class and you are the replacement instructor, you can claim this credit.
    • Give yourself (1) point for each approved exceptional contribution to teaching.

  • Taught a grad course (excluding 292, 293, 295)
    • The number of graduate level courses you teach.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each graduate level course you teach (even if the graduate course is team taught). Exclude courses 292, 293, and 295.
    • Example: If you teach two graduate level courses during the F22 - one of which is team taught: give yourself two (2) points in the F22 semester.

  • Number of grad students mentored (no. of students enrolled in 292, 293, and 295)
    • The number of grad students you mentor as part of courses 292, 293, and 295.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each grad student that is enrolled in any of 292, 293, and 295.
    • Example: If you mentor one graduate student enrolled in each of QSB292, 293 and 295 courses, give yourself three (1) point.
    • Note: no postdoc mentoring should be included in this calculation.

  • Protected Research Time
    • One can claim a credit for protected research time when they have a grant which requires a reduced teaching load.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each semester your grant requires you to reduce your teaching load.
    • Example: If your grant caps the number of units you may teach during the F22 semester, give yourself one (1) point in the F22 semester.

  • Administrative Teaching Release
    • One can claim a credit for administrative teaching release if they have been approved by the the Department Chair, the Dean, and/or the Academic Senate.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each semester you have been approved for administrative teaching release.
    • Example: If you have been approved for administrative teaching release for the F21 semester, give yourself one (1) point in the F21 semester.

  • Number of undergrad mentees
    • The number of undergraduates you mentor and who are enrolled in BIO-195.
    • Give yourself one (1) point for each of your undergraduate mentees in BIO-195.
    • Example: If you mentor three (3) undergraduates in F22 and two (2) in S23, give yourself three (3) points in the F22 and two (2) points in S23 semesters.
